Statement of Work

My work explores themes of isolation and the longing for deep understanding. Using life-size images of myself, I combine life drawing with the constructed form to provide convincing images that nevertheless defy expectations of accurate translations of life to canvas. I invite the viewer into a conversation with the work through the convincing depiction of space and form and then use characteristics of real space and form to describe and manipulate an unreal space. For instance, I use light to describe forms and create the mood; however, light does not actually function in reality as it does in my painting. The tension between real and unreal forms signals to the viewer that what is being depicted is a psychological and emotional space. Through a combination of technique and subject matter, I hope to cause my viewers to reflect on where they stand in relation to others in their lives.
