Sycamore House Music Series Spring 2015: Three Special Performances

Charlotte Street is joined by musical curator Shawn E. Hansen for the Spring 2015 Sycamore House Series. Hansen, a Kansas City composer and musician, has curated three unique performances, all of which will be presented at Charlotte Street’s la Esquina, 1000 W. 25th Street.

Sunday, April 19 at 8:00pm
Sycamore House presents the Astral Spirits Tour with Mike Majkowski, SSBT, and Johnny Hamil. In support of upcoming releases on Astral Spirits this month, Mike Majkowski of Berlin and SSBT of Austin are on an international tour. They will be joined for this performance by Kansas City-based artist Johnny Hamil. Music Forum Magazine says, “Majkowski needs to be seen to be believed.” This double bassist will perform solo. SSBT, an electro-acoustic trio, razes notions of volume, tempo, and symmetry via duel horns, duel guitars, tape, and percussion. Johnny Hamil, solo bassist, will perform from Gav7D, a new project reinterpreting a vocal record featuring 26 Kansas City singers.

Artist Jack Wright will play with his band Wrest, of Easton, PA, as well as a performance by This Is My Condition of Lawrence, KS. Wrest is a free improvisation band that plays together only on tour. This Is My Condition is artist Craig Comstock’s “one-man-band mayhem” since 2003.

In conjunction with the multi-disciplinary exhibition Disturbances in the Field, artists Daniel Bachman, Ignatz, and Mike Stover will all play solo musical sets. Daniel Bachman uses a deft fingerpicking technique on old-time Americana-rooted steel string guitar and banjo, as well as transformative sitar-led ragas with heavy drones. The Brooklyn Rail named experimental blues track “Drinking Tea and Bloody Marys” by Ignatz and De Stervende Honden as its Best Track of 2014. Mike Stover is a Kansas City-based guitarist proficient in both experimental and traditional musical environments.
