The Charlotte Street Foundation is excited to announce the beginning of their Neighborhood Artists Residency program. This is a pilot program that looks to build off of CSF’s established reputation to help artists and communities in the KC area. A Call for Entry is now active for artists who wish to work with area community members and invested supporters in the Troost Corridor. Charlotte Street is seeking visual, performing, writers, multidisciplinary or hybrid artists, regardless of level of formal arts education or lack thereof. The selection of participants reflects their desire to work collaboratively or within a community. Artists should possess awareness of cultural, regional, socio-economic or political topics and demonstrate interest in subject matter addressing the history and current state of Troost Avenue/Corridor.

ABOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD ARTIST RESIDENCY:
Artists selected will benefit from professional development training created in conjunction with Community Arts Training of St. Louis, MO. This development also includes a speaker series with visiting artists, community activists, media representatives, government officials and more. Residents will be supported in activities directly engaging the neighborhood surrounding Troost Corridor through collaborative arts focused projects, community outreach and dialogue and by hosting community events, meals and gatherings. The Neighborhood Artist Residency will reinforce the Charlotte Street Foundation vision of “Kansas City as a dynamic home for artists of various career stages and disciplines to thrive, while serving as natural catalysts for an exciting, innovate, and culturally rich city.”
Artists will work in the CSF Neighborhood Artists Residency Collaboration Center, which is a newly acquired collaboration space located at 4001 Troost Avenue, Kansas City, MO, 64109. The new space meets ADA requirements for accessibility, is accessible via public transportation and has on-site, free, private parking. Embedded in vital neighborhoods surrounding the Residency location at 4001 Troost, this location will provide a collaborative platform, venue, and resources to develop place-based responsive projects.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE PROGRAM?
Call for Entry is currently active for artists to apply for Neighborhood Artists Residency. Charlotte Street is looking to select six to eight artists and 50% of the artists must either live or work within a five mile radius of the project location (4001 Troost Ave, Kansas City, MO 64110). Applicants should be 21 years of age by the application deadline and must not be enrolled in a degree-seeking program. Applicants must also be available to attend all parts of the training module, with the first training session taking place between December 8-10. If the artist has earned an undergraduate degree, the completion date must be at least 12 months earlier than the application deadline. Artists should be available to participate in the program for an 18 month duration (December 1, 2017 through May 31, 2019). Selected artists should be able to attend monthly meetings at the Residency Collaboration Center and be able to attend the entire Community Arts Training module (schedule based on artist availability). Most importantly, artists should be willing to positively and respectfully engage with local and regional community members, leadership, government, and media.
WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR APPLICANTS?
The 2017 Charlotte Street Neighborhood Residency Fellows will be selected through an open call for applicants followed by a competitive selection process. A selection panel of regional visual arts professionals and Troost community member will be solely responsible for selecting the 2017 Neighborhood Residency Fellows. Neither staff nor Charlotte Street board members have any input in the final decisions. 12 finalists will receive 20 minute in-person interviews with the selection panel, providing opportunity for artists to share their work and respond to questions from the panel. Following interviews and final panel deliberations, the 2017 Neighborhood Residency Fellows will be notified by phone and confirmed by written correspondence.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Applications must be completed here at the Call For Entry website (callforentry.org). The title of the call is “Charlotte Street Foundation 2018 Neighborhood Residency.” Deadline for applications is Tuesday, October 31, 2017, 11:59 PM. No late applications will be considered. Application materials should include a Statement of Intent. This describes an artist need and desire for collaborative working space and estimated expected hours per week available for committed art production, collaboration, and community engagement on site. This should also describe materials and processes used in current studio practice. (Note: if your work requires the use of equipment or processes not possible in collaborative studio space, explain how your skills and experience may be relevant to new opportunities for art production in a collaborative space). A resume or CV is required.
Work Samples are the most important component of applications, and should be carefully selected and prepared to most strongly represent your work. Samples should represent work that has been completed within the last 3 years.
Work Sample Requirements:
- Up to 10 jpegs for visual artists
- Up to 3 audio or video samples for performing artists or exclusively time-based visual artists
- Up to 5 jpegs + up to 2 audio/visual samples for visual artists working in combination of still and time-based media
- Up to 3 writing samples/excerpts for writers. 10,000 words max
- For artists creating both still and time-based work, you may submit a combination of documentation of work completed in the past three years. You may submit either (6) images and (1) video totaling no more than 5-minutes, or (2) images and (2) videos totaling no more than 8-minutes. Compilation videos, as described above, are encouraged.
