Statement of Work

In experimental and hybrid forms of documentary, performance, and essay film, my work is a visual examination and critique on the structures, standards, and hierarchies in cinema. The performances in my films dissect and distort the cinematic apparatus, such as the camera, projector, and screen, to reveal the unseen outside the frame concealed by the conventions of film language. Such formal choreography is juxtaposed with the contexts in classical films, historical paintings, written works by artists, images from the internet, and archival photographs, which become recontextualized and redefined. Often situating myself as the performer, my practice is also a self-reflective contemplation on my political and historical position and role as an Asian female filmmaker in front and behind the camera.
