Statement of Work

As a queer woman raised in conservative Evangelicalism in Oklahoma, now on an unconventional career path in the lower Midwest, I create the narratives I want to read, that reflect my experience both in terms of religion and place. I give voice to my generation of “exvangelicals”—the young adults recovering from harmful dogma, creating new guidelines for living in a world they once believed could never be their true home. These experiences may be specific to this insular community, but reconciling one’s past with their present, navigating external pressures on familial love, and dismantling patriarchal systems are all human problems.

In my 20s, I lived in Boston, New York, and Taiwan, before settling in Kansas City. In my recommitment to the Midwest, I am increasingly focused on representing the vibrancy—and complexity—of this region in fiction.
