Statement of Work
•
Mike Hill’s work is often a study in contrasts, exploring unconventional subjects such as baseball and heavy metal music within mixed media drawing and paintings.
Currently, Hill’s work concerns itself with tensions between textures, colors and mark making, intertwined with the free-form doodling inspired by his own junior high notebooks. Mystical and occult-like imagery (inspired by Hill’s passion for heavy metal music), appear alongside geometric shapes and patterns. It’s a symbiotic relationship that allows Hill to indulge his playful and obsessive tendencies at once.
Mike Hill’s work has appeared in solo and group exhibitions across the country, including New York, Houston, Philadelphia and Kansas City. He was awarded a Charlotte Street studio residency in 2007, and named a Charlotte Street Visual Arts Fellow in 2008. He received his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Fine Arts.
