Midwest Poetics: Writing Workshop #1

In collaboration and partnership with Kansas City’s Marcus Yates and One Mic Stand KC, Charlotte Street introduces its new writing workshop, Midwest Poetics!

Our first workshop is on Monday, Jan. 24th from 6-8PM. Midwest Poetics is an opportunity for artists to make space, celebrate, and connect with the many voices that make the music and performance scenes that thrive in the Midwest. We want to give the mic to Black, and Indigenous vocalists, poets, writers, musicians and performers of color to celebrate their craft.

Midwest Poetics is a space for us all, where attendees will workshop new material in a peer-to-peer setting in Charlotte Street’s Kemper Library. Workshops will lead up to a quarterly showcase where artists will be encouraged to share what they’ve workshoped!

Hope-Lian Vinson

Hope-Lian Vinson is a Kansas City-based visual artist whose works recast elements of the built environment to explore internal narratives of history and identity. With a B.F.A in Painting, Art History, and a Social Practice Certificate from the Kansas City Art Institute, Hope-Lian works at the intersections of art and ecology by using locally-sourced clay and natural materials to reference place and geological processes. They have showcased works in MdW Atlas, SITE ONE, Sapien Gallery, and have recently returned from the Chop Wood Carry Water arts residency in the Driftless region of NW Illinois. They currently serve as the Marketing + Communications Manager at Charlotte Street, where they use their artistic background in community-organizing to provide critical support for Charlotte Street programs and initiatives.
