This September, ProdoLAB presents Adam Schlozman and Austin Glassco teaming up for a display of audio-reactive and live controlled projections that interact and engage the audience with the music as the program progresses.
Kansas City based guitarist and multi-instrumental producer, Adam Schlozman is the musical mind
behind the solo project “schemada.”
Schlozman incorporates a uniquely colorful palette of a jazz influenced improvisational approach into
electronic beat music with sonically vintage and nostalgic flavor. Bringing his original sounds and visual
aesthetic to the live stage with the joint efforts of on-stage musical collaborators and soloists–as well as
with video artist Austin Glassco (Agrekulture)–the show displays audio-reactive and live controlled
projections that interact and engage the audience with the music as the program progresses.
The concept that sets the framework for the flow of the program is based around 4 phases, beginning with
a Solo act, and subsequently a Duo act, then Trio, and finally Quartet. Each phase will have its own
distinct lighting features and/or set pieces, as well as a different set of visual stimuli from the projections
interacting with the music.
With each phase of the show there are a multitude of opportunities for symbolism linking the concepts of
1, 2, 3, and 4 with suggestive themes in the visual or musical realm. For example, the number “1” deals
with minimalism, isolation, as well as overall “one-ness” in the positive sense. “2” is binary, and suggests
themes relating to balance or yin/yang. The themes can be reinforced throughout the show in various
ways whether overt or subtle, while the program will naturally exhibit a built-in terracing effect of
increasing intensity by the gradual addition of performers to the stage.
schemada’s first iteration of his debut full-length album Chasm Spasm, Pt. 1 is “a digitally woven
patchwork of hidden worlds with a designated free-play zone for the ears. With sound as the framework of
tiny universes, the ideas become the inhabitants as the listener observes, and they scurry towards their
destined conclusions.” Schlozman’s writing style and music production is a culmination of his experiences
of both being a jazz musician steeped in the music’s tradition, as well as a child of the technological boom
of digital musicmaking and beatmaking culture. Along with an ever-present chase towards depth and
mastery of the artistic disciplines he inhabits, Schlozman constantly feeds his inclination to manipulate
data, pixels and soundwaves in new and unique ways to create artful experiences.
ProdoLAB is a bimonthly experimental platform in partnership with musician/composer Eddie Moore that pairs Kansas City time-based artists, producers, and musicians to collaborate on a new piece for a one-night-only showcase at Charlotte Street. Each performance is followed by a Q&A session with the artists.
