ABOUT THE ARTISTS

 

Melissa Ferrer Civil (she/they) is a christian, first-gen, queer, black, femme, multi-disciplinary artist, organizer, educator and theologian who battles with mental illness. Primarily a poet, Melissa writes into and from the body, and the spirit therein. She believes deeply in the quote spoken by June Jordan that says “Poetry is a political act because it involves telling the truth.”  They have performed on stages internationally and their published work can be found on their website at www.melissaferrerand.com. Kennedy Banks was born and raised in Chicago, IL, began her training at The Chicago High School for the Arts and received her BFA in Performance and Choreography at The University of Missouri-Kansas City (2021), where she has worked with numerous world-renowned choreographers and instructors. Kennedy has choreographed multiple works including collaborations with composers from the Chicagoland area and she is an active member of The Chicago Black Artist Union.

 

Joe McGuire aka Pleazure has been the main songwriter and producer as well as band leader and original co-founding DJ and promoter for the Afrolicious band, party, sound system, etc. Afrolicious is a dance-fusion collective centered in San Francisco, California founded by Joe and his brother Oz “Señor Oz” McGuire. The group’s weekly residency at the Elbo Room in the Mission District has established Afrolicious as an integral player in the San Francisco live music scene. In addition to its reputation for regular touring, Afrolicious has released two EPs as well as a full-length original album.
