Second Sundays at Boon Area 1

As part of the public programming for Potential Futures: Prototypes, curator Kimi Kitada invites you to Second Sundays at Boon Area 1 for a day of volunteering. Boon Area 1 is an environmental, interactive art installation created by artist Carl Stafford, acting as a community garden and social gathering space. Every Second Sunday, Stafford mobilizes the surrounding neighborhood for a day of planting native plants and beautification. The future goal for Boon Area 1 (and Boon Areas throughout the west side of District 5) is to generate enough revenue to fund neighborhood programs and projects.

ABOUT CARL STAFFORD

Born and raised in Kansas City, Carl Stafford graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Multimedia Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2006. His journey as an artist, environmental steward, and neighborhood leader has allowed him to see visions of thriving neighborhoods and communities in Kansas City. He founded the non-profit organization My Region Wins! in 2014.

Hope-Lian Vinson

Hope-Lian Vinson is a Kansas City-based visual artist whose works recast elements of the built environment to explore internal narratives of history and identity. With a B.F.A in Painting, Art History, and a Social Practice Certificate from the Kansas City Art Institute, Hope-Lian works at the intersections of art and ecology by using locally-sourced clay and natural materials to reference place and geological processes. They have showcased works in MdW Atlas, SITE ONE, Sapien Gallery, and have recently returned from the Chop Wood Carry Water arts residency in the Driftless region of NW Illinois. They currently serve as the Marketing + Communications Manager at Charlotte Street, where they use their artistic background in community-organizing to provide critical support for Charlotte Street programs and initiatives.
