Each month we have invited an artist to recommend a book that has inspired them, brought them joy or has been pivotal in some way. Join us every third Wednesday of the month as Artists share their relationship and interpretation of the book and facilitate the monthly discussions which will be hosted virtually. As we’re unable to meet in person feel free to enjoy your own refreshments as we zoom into your living room. Readers who register each month will be provided a zoom link.

BECAUSE OF THIS is a year-long exhibition + performance series that celebrates contemporary Black artistic life through the healing and transformative works of Midwest artists of the African Diaspora. Because of This is an ambitious undertaking in community building, spearheaded by curator Mary Lawson (Omaha, NE) whose selection of over thirty virtual and outdoor programs include visual art, performances, audio archive, critique series, panel discussions, and community bike rides.Wednesday, April 21 at 6:00 PM

Here are questions he would like us to think about as we are reading:- In what ways is the Empire's enslavement of The Nameless similar to American chattel slavery? In what ways is it different?
- How does memory inoculate you against oppressive or repressive forces? Or do you find that your embodied memory serves to retrench oppressive ways of thinking?
- Between book 1 and book 2, the artist changes. How do the artists interpret Coates's Black Panther differently?

Video Screening at Roanoke Park
Join us for the live screening event of three video works including the gleaners, and: ritual for signaled bodies by Benjamin Rosenthal (Kansas City, MO) & Eric Souther (Alfred, NY), Urban Violet and Southern Queery by André Terrel Jackson (Ewing, NJ), and Seeing Water Lilies by Maya Jeffereis (Brooklyn, NY). This event is open to a limited audience. Masks and social distancing will be enforced. Please bring your own chair or blanket.CW: For attendees bringing children, this event will include one film that uses strong language.

Movement Session w/ Bianca Medina
This multi-generational, community class will provide space to embrace body positivity and shared movement. The class will be led by Bianca Medina, who is a Boricua-Mexicana dance artist, teaching artist, choreographer, and arts administrator based in Brooklyn, NY. Open to all levels and dance backgrounds. Live Performances at Roanoke Park
Socially-distanced, outdoor dance performances, this event begins with Tristian Griffin Dance Company at Roanoke Park, followed by a sound walk of Sholeh Asgary’s Breath, and concluding with a live performance by Jeramy Zimmerman at Charlotte Street Foundation. RSVP required on Eventbrite, limited audience. Masks and social distancing will be enforced. Please bring your own headphones. Attendees can access free parking in the North parking lot at Hufft (3612 Karnes Blvd) and meet at the adjoining volleyball courts for the first performance. This event will take place at 12PM and repeat at 2PM. PEER: Artist Spotlight Series #3
Charlotte Street presents a new artist series, PEER, starting Wednesday, March 24th, 6:30- 7:00 PM. Each monthly program features short slide presentations from artists at different stages in their art practice. Each artist is selected based on their impact in Kansas City through risk-taking, openness, collaboration, and excellence. This rapid-fire 30 minute Zoom event will consist of short, five-minute slide presentations (similar to a Pecha Kucha) consisting of ten slides, thirty seconds per image. Each presentation will include examples of artists' portfolio, upcoming projects and influences. Following the presentations, the artists will participate in a group discussion facilitated by CSF. Guests may join in the conversation through Charlotte Street's Eventbrite link or Facebook Live. PEER programs will be recorded and shared following the event date.Wednesday, May 5 at 6:30-7:00 PM
Charlotte Street Artists’ Virtual Walks: Kathy Liao
In partnership with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art we are so excited to introduce the newly revamped Charlotte Street Artists’ Virtual Walks. This series will feature CSF’s 2020 Award Fellows— Vi Tran, Kathy Liao, Cory Imig, Stacy Busch, and Glyneisha Johnson. Zoom in as each local artist briefly discusses their work and the role and impact the Nelson-Atkins museum’s collections have had on their artistry.
May 5, join us as Kathy Liao, 2020 Visual Artist Award Fellow, shares about her artistic process and the works in the Nelson-Atkins collection that inspire her.

Here are questions she would like us to think about as we are reading:- This graphic novel tells the story of Soyeon, a middle-aged working-class Korean woman, and the lives of her friends. It was written by her thirty-something-year-old son. How do we empathize with others and tell their stories?
