“swailing” by lee emma running, opening friday, may 20 at project space

Swailing, an installation of new work by Iowa-based artist Lee Emma Running, opens with a free public reception on Third Friday, May 20, 6-9pm at Urban Culture Project Space, 21 E. 12th St. KCMO.  The opening will be followed by an artist talk on Saturday, May 21 at noon. Gallery hours are: Wednesday, Friday & Saturdays, 12-5pm; Thursdays 11-6. The show runs through July 2, 2011.

Lee Emma Running’s work is attentive to the particularities of her landscape, inspired by subtle changes that come with the change of season, and the intricacy of specimens gathered in the natural world.   Her delicate works are attentive to the particularities of her landscape, inspired by subtle changes that come with the change of season, and the intricacy of specimens gathered in the natural world. The work featured in Swailing, a term that refers to the prescribed burning of prairie or marshland, is specifically inspired by mystery and spectacle of the burning of grasses, and what is revealed in the wake of this process. Running presents an immersive environment including intricate cut paper pieces and drawings hanging in space, as well as a cut vinyl drawing attached to the street-level windows of the gallery.
