Charlotte Street Foundation opens call for 2020 StartUp Residency program
KANSAS CITY, Mo, July 16, 2019: Charlotte Street Foundation has partnered with the developing Pendleton Arts Block in the Historic Northeast district of Kansas City, MO as the next location for Charlotte Street’s 2020 StartUp Residency program. Artist-driven organizations, collectives and businesses less than five years old are heavily encouraged to apply for one to two years of rent-free storefront space located at 2300 Independence Avenue, Kansas City, MO, 64124. The residency program will begin on January 1, 2020.

Pendleton Arts Block is a project developed by Brinshore Development, LLC. The new property is a new 38-unit, mid-rise apartment building with a preference for artists, in the historic Northeast neighborhood of Kansas City, MO. The apartment complex is expected to open in the fall of 2019. Pendleton Artsblock will be a space where artists can live, work, share one’s art, learn from other artists, experience events and speakers, and give back to the local community – both within and outside of the building. Residents of Pendleton Arts Block will have the opportunity to shape their community while elevating the expose of one’s own work. Charlotte Street’s pilot StartUp Residency program aims to foster the development of an up-and-coming, innovative startup such as an artist-run collaborative, business, or organization. This pilot program builds upon Charlotte Street’s 20-year history of providing support and catalytic opportunities for Kansas City-based arts initiatives, entrepreneurs, and collaborative groups in their earliest stages of development. The residency started last year as a pilot program at 1662 Broadway Blvd, Kansas City, MO with Stray Cat Film Center becoming the first StartUp Residents in the residency program. Stray Cat Film Center is an artist-run non-profit media arts organization and neighborhood microcinema space.

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of arts administrators, arts entrepreneurs, and neighbors in the Northeast/Pendleton Heights Neighborhood. The committee will narrow the applicant pool to ten finalists, who will go through a round of interviews with the committee. Three resident organizations will be chosen by the selection committee following the interview round.
CRITERIA/ WHO SHOULD APPLY:
- Group or business must be defined as an artist-run or artist-centric organization with the ability to define and demonstrate artistic component(s) of the work, mission, or initiative of the organization
- Organization, collective or business must be less than five years old, with an established business plan or demonstrated proof of concept
- A startup can be a for-profit, not-for-profit, or hybrid business model (such as a fiscally sponsored LLC)
- Artists connected with the Historic Northeast Neighborhood are encouraged to apply
