KANSAS CITY, MO, September 16, 2019: Charlotte Street Foundation has opened the application window for local artists to apply towards the 2019 Charlotte Street Visual Artist Awards and the 2019 Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Awards. The call for applications is open from October 10 through Sunday, November 10 at 11:59 PM (Mountain Time). Applications are accepted exclusively through Call for Entry and there is no entry fee. 2020 Charlotte Street Awards

A rotating panel of local and national Awards Advisors is responsible for selecting Charlotte Street Foundation Award recipients each year. Since 2004, Charlotte Street has brought esteemed contemporary art curators from other cities to participate in the selection of the Awards recipients. A public announcement of featured panelists will be released when artist recipients are announced in February of 2020.

Eligible artists who qualify for this free application must currently live and have lived in the five-county Greater Kansas City Metro area (Clay, Jackson, Johnson, Platte, Wyandotte) for at least one year prior to application deadline (before November 10, 2019). Artists must also be at least 21 years of age by application deadline and must not be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program (if the artist has earned a collegiate degree, the completion date must be at least 12 months earlier than the application deadline). Applicants do not need to have to have attended an undergraduate or graduate school to be considered for this award.

The 2020 Charlotte Street Visual Artists Awards seek to recognize and significantly support Kansas City-based visual artists of all media who are creating exceptional contemporary work. Providing artists with financial support, critical recognition, and public exposure, these Awards aim to reward artistic accomplishment to date and to support the continued development of artists’ work and careers. Artists at any career stage are heavily encouraged to apply.

Three local artists awarded the 2020 Visual Artist Award will receive an unrestricted cash grant of $10,000, recognition by Charlotte Street at the time of the Award announcement and throughout the year 2020, and inclusion in the 2020 Charlotte Street Visual Artist Award exhibition at Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, accompanied by a printed brochure with images and commissioned writing about their work.

The 2020 Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Awards seek to recognize, encourage, and significantly support Kansas City-based artists creating original and exceptional new work in all genres of performance. Providing artists with financial support, critical recognition and public exposure, these Awards aim to reward artistic accomplishment to date and to support the continued development of artists’ work and careers.

Two local artists awarded the 2020 Generative Performing Artist Award will be given an unrestricted cash grant of $10,000 and recognition by Charlotte Street at the time of Award announcement and throughout the year of 2020, including through announcements to media, web-based marketing and promotion, special events, etc.

Since 1997, Charlotte Street’s Visual Artist Award has supported 97 outstanding visual artists living in Kansas City through annual, unrestricted cash awards, with a total of $721,500 now distributed directly to visual artists. These competitive awards recognize locally based artists who are creating outstanding artwork and show great accomplishment and promise. These awards provide financial support, critical attention, and increased exposure for these artists with the aim of fostering their continued artistic and professional development.

ABOUT THE CHARLOTTE STREET GENERATIVE PERFORMING ARTIST AWARDS

Charlotte Street launched its Generative Performing Artist Awards in 2008 as a parallel program to the Visual Artist Awards. With the 2019 Awards, Charlotte Street has continued to act as a catalyst for discovering and supporting contemporary performing art, and has now distributed $190,000 to 23 performing artists creating original new work in the fields of dance, theater, music, performance, spoken word, and hybrid/interdisciplinary performance-based forms. These Awards aim to recognize and meaningfully support artists producing exceptional performance-based work that is original, innovative, and progressive.
