Charlotte Street Foundation presents a new performance art exhibition, Moving in Place, on view from March 4-19, 2022 and curated by Kimi Kitada, Jedel Family Foundation Curatorial Fellow. Moving in Place delves into the medium of performance through the work of nine artists, spanning live performance, video art, and sculptural and photo-based installations.

Featuring: Barber (Chicago, IL), Betsy Brandt (St. Louis, MO), Justin Tyler Bryant (Little Rock, AR), Haley Kostas (Kansas City, MO), Lilly McElroy (Kansas City, MO) + Christopher Carroll (New York, NY), Yvonne Osei (St. Louis, MO), Michelle Sui (Los Angeles, CA), and Johanna Winters (Kansas City, MO).

As a curatorial thread, the artists in this exhibition use their own bodies as material and vessel for performance-based works. The presence of the body is integral to the realization of each piece. Just as the field of performance art is open-ended, these works are non-linear and exploratory. How does site inform a performance? Could a given performance be reenacted in any museum or gallery space, or is the work deeply embedded in the landscape, context, and histories of a particular site?

Hope-Lian Vinson

Hope-Lian Vinson is a Kansas City-based visual artist whose works recast elements of the built environment to explore internal narratives of history and identity. With a B.F.A in Painting, Art History, and a Social Practice Certificate from the Kansas City Art Institute, Hope-Lian works at the intersections of art and ecology by using locally-sourced clay and natural materials to reference place and geological processes. They have showcased works in MdW Atlas, SITE ONE, Sapien Gallery, and have recently returned from the Chop Wood Carry Water arts residency in the Driftless region of NW Illinois. They currently serve as the Marketing + Communications Manager at Charlotte Street, where they use their artistic background in community-organizing to provide critical support for Charlotte Street programs and initiatives.
