The Kansas City Underground Film Festival opens this weekend, Sept. 7-9, and continues Sept. 13- 16 at Charlotte Street, 3333 Wyoming St. The festival, in its fourth year, features 71 titles, whittled down from 793 submissions, from all over the world, as well as our corner of it. The festival’s local showcase, Sept. 16, features roughly a dozen filmmakers from Missouri and Kansas.

Two Lawrence-based projects among recipients of 2023 Rocket Grants
The 2023 Rocket Grants have awarded a total of $60,000 for 10 artist projects in the Lawrence and Kansas City area. Two awards will support Lawrence-based projects: the planting of fruit trees around Lawrence Public Library accompanied by collective song by artists Skyler Adamson and Hazlett Henderson, and a new play by Timmia Hearn DeRoy, who recently received her doctorate in theatre from the University of Kansas.

In partnership with Charlotte Street, Mid-America Arts Alliance has selected 25 artists to take part in their Artist INC program. The Artist INC program is an eight-week course that helps artists build their confidence in their decision making and professional judgment. Throughout the program, artists can expect to build and expand on skills ranging from building their own personal brand to public speaking.
