Statement of Work

I believe in the ensemble mind; that the sum of the creative whole is greater than its parts. I believe in risking the pretentious to reach the sublime. Foremost, I believe in play, the play that we engaged in as children—uninhibited, imaginative, determined play. I believe that in tapping into this ferocious play we can move our audience and awaken their souls.

I’m a “slash artist”: an actor/creator/director/writer/singer/songwriter/musician/teacher. For over 25 years, I have been creating original work. Although I specialize in ensemble-based physical theatre, with each project I allow the content to inform the form. Patterns have risen to the top; my work is character-driven, informed by music, and embraces the poetic clown—flawed, ridiculous, fiercely determined, and desperately seeking love.

The work begins with a group of people—and often “stuff”—in a room. I call on my teaching experience to lead and inspire a group, and on my skills in music and physical theatre to create a world and characters that vibrate at a higher frequency than our own. With each new project, I learn to weave a balance between leading and discovering; I am inspired by happy accidents and found objects, of epiphanies that come on the break, or the drive home.
